Thank you to Crafts Council and Kent County Council for funding these workshops for 13 to 18 year olds.
The Makers of Tomorrow project champions and builds a greater understanding of craft in all its forms as a viable career including improved knowledge of career pathways.
Practical workshops for 13 to 18 year olds were delivered and explored craft with 4 makers from different art and craft disciplines, participating in making and finding time to chat about being a maker and career opportunities.
- Making was at the heart of the sessions, discovering new skills, developing existing skills and growing in confidence in the practices.
- Creating encounters and experiences.
- Building the community by doing, joining in, having fun, experimenting.
- Making opportunities for young people to try out new things, discover and try crafts not encountered before, to meet the makers, discuss the opportunities available, further education, apprenticeships, work placements.

The callout was sent out to a number of secondary schools in the area, as well as the home school network and we were really pleased that the young people that joined the workshops came from 8 different schools across the area, as well as young people that are home-schooled.
Many of the young people came alone and did not know any of the rest of the group at the beginning of the sessions. As time passed the conversations grew and they all contributed to the discussions about craft careers.
They found affinity in their interest in craft and making and were interested to hear about the career pathways of the workshop delivery partners.
We hope to continue and are seeking out sources of funding.
